Canada in Focus Film Program
17 November 2020
Following the adopted format, the Golden Apricot festival organizes a focus on a specific country every year. For its 17th edition, GAIFF presents Canada in Focus program with the generous support of Telefilm Canada.
It is the first time that Golden Apricot festival is cooperating with Telefilm Canada which has a major contribution in organizing exclusive screenings of the newest Canadian films for the Armenian audience as well as various on-line activities.
One of the highlights of Canada in Focus Program is the premier of the last film of famous Canadian director of Armenian origin Atom Egoyan The Guest of Honor. The film’s world premiere took place in September 2019 at the Venice International Film Festival. Egoyan's film was also among the favorites at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival. The Yerevan Premier of the film is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the director, who more than 10 years was an Honorable President of the Golden Apricot festival, and who is now a member of GAIFF’s Artistic Board.
The other films to be screened within the Canada in Focus Program are: Antigone by Sophie Deraspe, the winner of Best Canadian Feature Award at the 44th Toronto International Film Festival and also the winner of Canadian Screen Award 2020; A Woman, my Mother/ Une femme, ma mère by Claude Demers, the winner of the Grand Prize for Best Canadian Feature at the Montreal International Documentary Festival – RIDM 2019; Wilcox by Denis Côté, the winner of the Special Jury Prize at the Montreal International Documentary Festival – RIDM 2019; Here And There, a new documentary by Gariné Torossian which is a rare sample of Canadian-Armenian co-production.
The screenings will be held from 9-26 November in KinoPark and CinemaStar. The Program will be realized within the framework of Golden Apricot festival’s “Support to Cinemas” action which is aimed to support cinemas seriously affected by the pandemic.
As a part of Canada in Focus Program, the online talk with Denis Côté will be organized and will be broadcasted on the festival webpage and social media channels to be accessible for wider audience. The Armenian audience is familiar with Denis Côté films as at least three of them have been presented at the Golden Apricot Festival.
