In 2005, the oldest open air second-hand bookseller Vahan Kocaoğlu was driven from his place on Kartal Sokak in Galatasaray where he was selling second-hand books for forty years. Arriving from Yozgat to Istanbul with his family in 1928, the Armenian Vahan Kocaoğlu (born 1925) is the living witness of the socio-cultural and social transformations which Istanbul has undergone since 1930s. Many intellectuals in the Turkish cultural and artistic life have been customer of Vahan. Vahan Kocaoğlu, a master, a gentleman, an uncle, a brother, a second-hand bookseller… This is the portrait of an Istanbul gentleman, narrated in his own words and with the testimonials of his family members, his customers and friends.

Born 1981, Istanbul, Turkey. She graduated from the Istanbul Technical University, Civil Engineering Department, Environmental Engineering in 2002 and studied philosophy for a while. She currently does her PhD in social sciences at the same university and recently as a guest doctorate researcher at Technische Universitat Berlin, at the History and Art History Department. Between 2005 and 2010 she has worked at Santralistanbul, as coordinator for preparation of contemporary art exhibitions. She has produced short videos and video-interviews. “A Shadow among Pages: The Second-Hand Book Seller Vahan” is her first documentary film.
