The film tells the story of a young Chinese woman, Mei, who leaves her monotonous village life behind for the excitement of the nearest big city, Chongqing. However, life there doesn't quite turn out as she expected it. Fired from her factory job, she falls in love with Spikey, a hit man whose own past soon catches up with him. A spur of the moment decision takes Mei to London, where she marries an elderly man, Mr. Hunt. A new life begins for Mei, trapped in the silence of Mr. Hunt's house, alienated and bored. Her frustration with life with Mr. Hunt leads Mei into an affair with Rachid, an Indian immigrant who runs a local take away restaurant, and she moves into the backroom of the restaurant to live with him. Rachid decides to return to his own country, leaving Mei pregnant and alone, facing an uncertain future.

| Guo, Xiaolu  Xiaolu Guo (born 1973, China)
Studied at the Beijing Film Academy and received her MA in 2000. In 2002 studied directing at the UK’s National Film and Television School. Xiaolu’s film The Concrete Revolution was screened at more than 50 film festivals around the world, and her feature film How Is Your Fish Today? premiered at the Edinburgh IFF (2006), and has been selected for both the Rotterdam VPRO Tiger Award competition and the Sundance competitive fiction section in 2007. A published author in China since the age of 14, her first novel Village of Stone, translated into English, was shortlisted for the 2005 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize and the 2006 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. Her Orange Prize - nominated novel A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers, was published in America and Europe in 2007, and was followed with the novel 20 Fragments of a Ravenous Youth. Her most recent novel UFO in Her Eyes was published in 6 languages in 2009.
