Visionary Canadian filmmaker Guy Maddin pays tribute to his beloved hometown with a goodbye letter and self-described “docu-fantasia” that is equally a transcendental rumination, historical chronicle and personal portrait. In the first part Maddin’s camera drifts through crowded trains like in a dream and the director/narrator ponders just why the city boasts the largest number of sleepwalkers among its residents as compared to any other major international city. Then images of numerous historical monuments in the city are presented to the viewer along with key historic events. As the third and final part gets underway, the director, inspired from filmmaker William Castle, presents the pivotal – and often traumatic – events of his childhood that left an indelible imprint while simultaneously forming his unique vision of his beloved Winnipeg.

| Maddin, Guy Guy Maddin (born 1956, Winnipeg, Canada)
Maddin’s show business career began early when as a child he received a piggy-back ride from the immortal Bing Crosby. Maddin studied Economics at the University of Winnipeg. He worked as a bank teller and house painter before settling upon a career as a filmmaker. For his first three legendary features, Maddin worked in tandem with one of the world’s best producers, Greg Klymkiw. Together, they were a powerhouse team. Maddin’s father, Charlie, was the business manager of Canada’s National Hockey Team. Curiously enough, Maddin’s producer, Greg Klymkiw also had a father who played goal on the same team. Maddin lives and works in Winnipeg.
