The film is an intimate portrait of the legendary Italian screenwriter, poet, painter, ceramist, artist Tonino Guerra. He recounts the important moments, which have determined the course of his life and career: from his childhood in Santarcangelo di Romagna to his retirement in the small mountain village of Pennabilli. He narrates his big adventure in the movies and his encounters and collaboration with some of the greatest film directors of our time – Fellini, Antonioni, Rosi, De Sica, Monicelli, Tarkovsky and Angelopoulos just to mention a few.

A graduate of New York University, Nicola Tranquillino has worked for many years within the New York underground film scene and for Italian National Television as writer, editor and producer. He has directed several short films and music videos and is at the moment collaborating with director Abel Ferrara with whom he has already written two screenplays for Daughter and Pericle il Nero, which is presently in pre-production. He also wrote a screenplay based on the life of Ernest Hemingway with maestro Tonino Guerra. Tonino Guerra: il Poeta del Cinema is his first documentary.
