Estamira

Brazil
2004, 115min.

Script/Dir./Dir. of Phot.: Marcos Prado, Compos.: Decio Rocha, Sound: Leandro Lima, Edit.: Tuco, Prod.: Marcos Prado, Jose Padilha.

Estamira is a 63-year-old woman who lives at a garbage dump near Rio de Janeiro. She is also diagnosed with a severe form of schizophrenia. Prado followed her character, disclosed her story, and portrayed her environment for nearly five years. The outcome is a picture as complex as documentaries can be, built in infinite layers of mystery and understanding. Estamira is trapped in an obsessive monologue of hate, to the point that sometimes her fury leads her to speak in a dialect of her own.The object of her verbal aggression is no less than God himself, a deceitful, bad God, responsible for all the trouble created around her.
