Two musicians have radically different approaches to the Kamancheh, a traditional string instrument. While one observes its traditional roots in folklore, the other experiments with electronic sounds. He is Abbas Kiarostami’s son. He worked with his father on several films before directing A Journey to the Land of the Traveler (1994), a documentary recording his father’s meeting with the main actors of The Traveler 20 years earlier. His documentary entitled The Project, follows his father’s work during the filming of Cannes winner The Taste of Cherry. His subsequent films, shown at many film festivals, are primarily dedicated to art and music, at times touching on religious themes as well. In addition, he has translated a number of books, including The Mahabharata by Jean-Claude Carrier and Hot Water Music by Charles Bukowski. He has also produced The Light for Arte (2002) and I saw Shoosh. One of his latest films, The Leech, is an autobiographical excursion consisting of three episodes that explore the father-son relationship.
