In 1981, he graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at the Moscow State University named after Lomonosov, specializing in Esthetics and Ethics.
From 1981-1982, he lectured at the Polytechnic Institute in Yerevan. Between 1982-1985, he worked at Armenfilm studio as an assistant to the director, and later as director. In 1989, he graduated from the film directing department in VGIK. Teaches film directing in VGIK. From 1992-2002, he was the secretary of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia. Since 1993 he is the president and general producer of the "St. Anna" Film Festival.
