After having attended the London Film School and London School of Dramatic Arts in England, he became a documentary director in the seventies. Simultaneously, he created a theater troupe and directed several plays in Armenian and Persian. Arriving in France in 1983, he began working as an editor in several production and dubbing companies. In 1987, he was hired as assistant to Peter Brook for his English version of Mahabharata.
